In the month of August we asked the question: “What class is the most fun to play?” and the answer is what I thought all along, the Monk just lost out to Other. If I had been able to include every single class ever published then I suspect the Monk would have just won hands down. The combination of movement powers and attack powers means that the Kung-Fu master simply has more exciting options than anyone else.
One thing was shocking, however, was that the fighter came away with a 3rd place position. I tried to mix up the options to include all the roles and a mix of classes from different sources, and I really did the Fighter in that mix because I needed a non-striker from PH1. I never would have thought that the fighter would have scored so well. I’m curious why. Is it simply because the Fighter has been around from the start and so a lot of people have played them? Is it because the Fighter can take a licking and keep on ticking? Why do you think?
I’m also curious that the Psion came in dead last. It’s a fresh new mechanic with psionics but do those new rules equal boring? It is an issue that they have less variety of powers even if you can augment them? Why is the psion so not fun?
In the mean time, here are the full results, followed by the Poll of the Month for September.
1st Other – 22 votes, 21.4%
2nd Monk – 17, 16.5%

I don’t find it surprising, tha the fighter scored relatively high. It is a PHB 1 class, but on that works exceptionally well. I am inclined to say, that despite (or because of) the fact that it was among the first classes published, it works so awesomely well! Maybe the best there is in its role. It’s mark and stickyness are very strong, and he does more than enough damage, that you can’t easily ignore him.
And it’s simple! (The Battlemind or Warden are more complicated and less effective IMO)
And maybe it’s some luck, you posted this poll beforre essentials are here. The fighter might be seen as less interesting with these releases.

I was suspecting many other people liked Eberron but thought WOC knew what they were doing putting out another Forgotten Realms book. It is still early though, I will have to wait for the final results at the end of the month.

The fighter’s main strength is that WotC has a very strong understanding of how the class works. They know what its strengths are and how to design for them. As a result, there are a plethora of good concepts functional in multiple level ranges for the fighter.
I have seen many mechanically sound fighter builds that, if someone didn’t know the game, would not look like the same class. So it is a class that you can play many different times and not feel like it’s just the same character. It is a class with replayability. I have, in my playgroup, seen several different dwarf fighters that played out very differently, as well as a minotaur that was also a CON fighter build. And DEX and WIS fighters also have very potent builds available. That, in my opinion, is what makes the fighter fun to play. It’s strong, it’s simple, and it’s non-repetitive.
